Video Game Time Line Task

Game Design Through The Years
Over the past 30 years Computer Games have come a long way, from Pong to the ultra realistic Beyond. The design of a game and how it looks is major part of its success and it’s a major talent in getting right. Past games are now considered pieces of art and major influences in the production of new games and movements.
You will need to construct a time line featuring the earliest video games right through to the most current high tech ground breaking. I would like your time line to be highly visual with images of all the games that have changed the course of video game design. The will need to be some text involved highlighting the major changes and the introduction of different machines.
You will need to document this on your Blog, ensure that you enclude important dates and visuals. Reflect on how these games have changes and how society have responded to them.

Homework Task 21/9

For Homework please do a blog post containing the following:

Select ONE inventory item from a game with an interesting array of items.

It is important that this item is well designed and has a distinctive style. Items that look stylised and artistically drawn are best. If you are stuck on what to choose, look outside to games you would not normally play - or indeed use the games suggested in the assignment brief. On the course you need to look outside of the design of your favourite games.

In your post please screenshot or show an image of the inventory item and write a paragraph on it. (Please title the item and reference which game it is from first).

  • Please state which game the item is from and what the item does (its functionality).
  • Describe the way the item has been rendered or drawn. Is it 2D or 3D, does it look cell shaded, photographic, comic styled? Each game will have different styles and ways of rendered.
  • Evaluate the visual style of the object, does it look effective and fit into the game world?
  • How could you improve the visual look of the object?

Please structure your notes in a paragraph using the bullet points as starting points.

Completed and uploaded by next Wednesday, thank you.

Unit 5 Inventory Task

Record and evaluate 3 types of inventory from different games. Try to ensure the games are of different genres and inventory types if possible.

What type of inventory is it? (using styles from presentation)

How does the user interact with the inventory? (eg. controls)

What is controlled within it? (items or player attributes)

How is the interface accessed by the player from the game screen?

Does the inventory suit the gameplay?

What do you think of the inventory and why?

How may this influence your own design?

To be completed for Friday Please.

Critical Path Project

(Taken from Kotaku.com)
A group of filmmakers have launched a new project called Critical Path that sets out to be the "definitive documentary archive project" for video game culture and history.
Head over to the website to see 121 different interviews with a whole bunch of gaming figures (not 121; some of the clips are repeats).

Interviewees include Civilization creator Sid Meier, Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, and Metal Gear Solid designer Hideo Kojima, among many others.

The folks behind Critical Path plan to continuously update the archive with new interviews. They're also launching a documentary film at some point in the future.

Game Globe (Square Enix)

Square Enix's game creation tool, fully integrated into a browser and linked to social network. Akin to Little Big Planet allows users to create their own games.

Beta signups at present.
